Considering we've seen enough examples of OP characters done well, yeah, that's not cutting it.

I'll give Mathias this, at LEAST he has a personality compared to the Kenja no Mago protagonist. Which makes sense, considering this show is essentially a mix of Kenja no Mago and Misfit at Demon Academy.

Gold, even with that small positive aspect of the show, I STILL think the show's an overall piece of crap.

I'm not defending the show by any means, I'm saying we've seen better OP characters, and Mathias AIN'T one of them.

I don't even remember the MC's name, so yes, that's if we're talking characters, but you can't deny that the plot isn't so bad, it just wasn't made as good as it could've been, as is the case with most anime.

OK, the plot, I'll give you that on. I mean, it's nothing impressive, but I suppose I'll take this over some of the recent fantasy anime we've got. And while it's not TERRIBLE by any means, like I said, we've seen enough examples of fantasy anime done well, that it's inexcusable when it comes to shows like this, and THAT'S something that neither you, me, or anyone can't deny.

Noah Winns-Cromer, I recommend you stop watching the anime since you dislike it so much...
First to correct one of your earlier blunders:
Misfit at demon academy was published in 2018, whereas this was published in 2016
that being said it can be compared to Kenja no mago, as that was published in 2015

Any real anime critic would understand that they were books before they were animated, and would look at those publication dates BEFORE spouting that something is a copy of another.

Every single time your kind shows up and complains spouting the same "this is the absolute worst travesty ever" tripe... and yet every time you guys keep watching it and thus the anime remains the same. you cast your vote by giving the show views. Google collects this data and sells it to companies. even on a third party site like this, you can rest assured, your vote still counts.

Now, I personally enjoy the Isekai-fantasy-other world genre, like many others do, and am perfectly satisfied with what is available.

1. OK, first and foremost, I'll admit, not getting WHEN the source material was published, THAT'S on me. I apologize for that. However, even though the LN for this came out in 2017, while the LN's for Misfit and Kenja came out in 2018 and 2015 respectively according to MAL, it DOESN'T change the fact that this show is giving off familiar beats to two mediocre anime. Plenty of other people pointed out this feels similar to Kenja, though I see more compare it to Misfit. Plus, for all we know, MAYBE someone working on the anime wanted to go that route.

2. IDK where you got the impression I'm a "real anime critic", I never said I WAS. I'm just a guy giving out his opinion. Speaking of which, so have others, and many aren't too pleased with the anime, many complaining about the pacing. Yet out of all the comments, YOU single me out. If you're so worried about "my kind", maybe practice what you preach, and tell that to every single person who complained about the pacing of the anime?

3. Kevin, if you enjoy isekai/fantasy anime, I would assume you've seen enough examples of good and bad fantasy and isekai anime. Because this ain't it chief. We've seen better.

I am with you on this one. This one is not giving me the good kick I need but I am watching it anyways as I liked its manga and because I do not have any other anime to watch.

read manga, in manga, it is absoutely lit. his grandparents are also in action too. too bad season 1 isnt as good as manga.

Basically what's been established last episode, in terms of Mathias' abilites and how his crest is supposedly the weakest, yet it can practically do ANYTHING.

but they explained it well. his crest is actually the strongest and the strong crests that the demons tricked everyone into thinking that were strong were actually meant for enchanting.

also, he would realistically be The Greatest Sage in his passed life, so it makes perfect sense why he is soo strong in this life, due to the fact that they say he "regained his memories". that means he keeps all of his experiences of his passed life wile starting as new. he didnt even get killed, he forced himself to reincarnate due to hitting a ceiling in his passed life.

so his strength makes perfect sense.

Past him was so broken though, that's you'd forget the crest stuff was even a plot point.

Because its not, its a demon conspiracy and this is the strongest crest for close combat and rapid fire magic

I know they didn't explain it in the best way but his old crest was the best at enchanting and not his prefered style of fighting closed compat which his current crest is best at.

it is considered the weakest due to the the manipulation of outer powers. This is a regressed humanity which has also lost most of its knowledge as well

Which ALSO happens to be a similar plotline we've seen in Misfit at Demon Academy.

misfit is the younger series of the two novels, though both started around a year apart.

But last episode also explained demons were invading the kingdom for centuries intentionally manipulating and trying to weaken their magic by making them believe it.

His crest is the strongest though. He had the weakest crest in his previous life.

I don't see the contradiction but this is a trashy level anime we gotta just shut off our brains here

Probably goes without saying, but the manga has more detail. Even has the parts of his life before going to the academy. The biggest enemy here is really the pacing of the anime.

I would agree. Might start reading more manga and light novels, I feel like I'd get a better experience overall. Sadly, my part-time job only pays so much, but I'll do what I can. XD
